Summer High School Programs at Boston University Summer Term 2009 Prepares Students for College

(PRWEB) May 5, 2009 -- High school students from around the globe can discover the perfect mix of academic challenge and summer fun with Summer Term High School Programs at Boston University. Boston University's college summer programs for high school students (http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/) introduce motivated students to the undergraduate college experience, while providing a superb opportunity to get to know Boston--one of the nation's most dynamic cities.

Boston University Summer Term has three pre-college programs which are currently open for registration: High School Honors, Summer Challenge, and Summer Preview. Each program provides an opportunity for students to focus on a subject of interest, explore new areas of thought, or learn topics not normally offered at their high school.

High School Honors (http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/honors/) (June 28-August 7) is a six-week program for students entering their senior year of high school in the fall, as well as exceptional students preparing to begin their junior year. High School Honors students enroll in two Boston University summer courses, studying alongside BU students and earning up to eight college credits. With over 100 undergraduate courses to choose from, students find dozens of subjects not typically available in high school. In addition to earning credits that may be transferred to a four-year college, courses taken at BU can help students decide upon their major. Students can choose whether to live on campus or commute.

The two-week, fully residential Summer Challenge (http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/summer-challenge/) (three sessions: June 17-July 1, July 5-17, or July 26-August 7) is open to students starting their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school in the fall. Students choose two non-credit college seminars (http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/summer-challenge/seminars.shtml), allowing students to further their learning without focusing on grades. A choice of 14 seminars means that students can discover or pursue a particular interest, focus on a subject not offered at their high school, or determine possible college majors. In a small class setting, students participate in lectures, discussions, individual and group work, project-based assignments, and field trips.

The one-week Summer Preview (http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/summer-preview/) (July 20-24) is open to Boston area students who will be high school freshmen or sophomores in the fall. Students enroll in one, non-credit college seminar (http://www.bu.edu/summer/high-school-programs/summer-preview/seminars.shtml), choosing from four exciting subjects. Each seminar is designed to engage students in an intensive exploration of a specific topic through lectures, discussions, and individual and group work. Students also benefit from a college workshop that gets them thinking about what they can do in high school to maximize the effectiveness of their college applications. Summer Preview is for commuters only.

All students in Boston University Summer Term High School Programs enjoy a vibrant social atmosphere, getting to know peers from around the U.S. and abroad. Students who are eligible to live on campus also have an exciting opportunity to become familiar with the ins-and-outs of life in a college residence hall. Those who live in the residence have the support and guidance of experienced residential staff, who also lead a variety of planned social activities on campus, and organize impromptu adventures into the city of Boston.
